NUTON: NPL's UTC Time Over Networks (pronounced Newton)

The NUTON project (NPL's UTC Over Networks), is a Feasibility Study that will investigate the most suitable technologies which could be used to provide a time transfer mechanism between the main NPL facility at Teddington, the proposed National Timing Centre (NTC) hubs and core Critical National Infrastructure locations across the UK.

The selected time transfer technologies will enable the NTC hubs to be synchronised to the UTC timescale controlled by NPL at Teddington, and will allow the NTC hubs to then use one of the selected technologies to synchronise end-user applications.

Due to the potentially large number of geographically diverse end-user applications that need to be synchronised to UTC(NPL) it is envisaged that the time transfer technology required will include some form of wireless low frequency broadcast system.
