On October 27, 2022, Samoa announced that the construction of its first Police Academy started and would be completed in 18 months.
The academy is funded by the Chinese Government at an estimated cost of over $15 million tala ($5.36 million USD) and the Samoa Government at a cost of $1 million tala. A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the start of academy construction on the site at Tafa'igata, an old prison.
Police and Prison Minister Faualo Lefau Harry Schuster, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa, and China’s Ambassador to Samoa Chao Xiaoliang attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. The academy is estimated to be completed by mid-2024. The project includes construction of both functional buildings and auxiliary facilities.
