Grant Description

Commercial opportunities in space are driving an exponential increase in the number of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Overcrowded orbits, space debris, and inadequate data increase the likelihood of collisions, threatening infrastructure and limiting the potential of the space industry. Space traffic management has become impossible with current satellite/object tracking solutions.

Satellite operators receive hundreds of thousands of collision warnings at huge cost every day, with a 99.9% false positive rate due to imprecise data. The vast majority of warnings are ignored, resulting in catastrophic collisions and more debris.

Lumi Space’s revolutionary satellite laser ranging (SLR) platform tracks objects in LEO with 1,000x greater accuracy than current solutions.

The platform will enable satellite operators to act decisively on collision avoidance, reduce operational/insurance costs, and create new markets in active debris removal & satellite servicing/proximity operations.
