Grant Description

Hydrokinetic power generation harnesses the energy from flowing water in rivers. Unlike traditional hydroelectric power it does not require any dams or other large man-made infrastructure to be placed in the waterway, eliminating the damaging environmental impacts of such structures. Coupled with this, hydrokinetic power plants are able to generate continuous power from rivers that are always flowing.

This sets it aside from intermittent renewable generation sources such as wind, solar and tidal, and enables it to deliver "baseload" renewable electricity without the need for expensive battery systems.

AEL has developed an innovative hybrid technology which couples hydrokinetic generation with solar - the Floating Instream Tidal and Solar ("FITS") power plant. FITS technology has been specifically optimized for river deployments, and is scalable to enable both energy access and utility/commercial scale power generation. This project will help develop AEL's marketing and intellectual property strategies as the company seeks to commercialise after the completion of its first full-scale, energy access pilot project in Nepal.
