Overcoming Metering Data Challenges to Realize Inclusive EV Charging Infrastructure

The rapid increase in Electric Vehicle (EV) charger installations aligns with the UK government's ambition to deploy 300,000 chargers by 2030\. However, the existing billing methods favor individuals with off-street parking and direct access to home electricity tariffs. This situation disproportionately affects around 30% of the UK population (Catapult Energy Systems), especially those in high-density urban areas or new developments lacking designated parking spaces.

The disparity in billing models poses a significant obstacle to achieving fair and widespread adoption of net-zero transportation.

In this project, Brim Chargers (EV charger manufacturer for home builders (1% market share) and associated software developer) and Weston Homes (home builder, Brim Chargers' customer) seeks to tackle the challenge of achieving net-zero transport by exploring data sharing between EV chargers and home electricity metering systems. By understanding and testing the amalgamation of distinct data protocols, the study will explore how better data sharing practices can enable information exchanges regarding energy consumption, charging status, authentication details, and tariff information.

This initiative aims to unlock opportunities for achieving net-zero mobility by providing affordable charging solutions. Forecasts suggest potential annual revenue of approximately £48.57 million by Year 5 post-project (representing a 208.47% annualized return on investment for taxpayers' grant). Ultimately, the project lays the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable EV charging infrastructure, vital for meeting broader net-zero transport objectives.
