The move towards net zero requires a massive expansion of energy infrastructure, including EV charging, renewables, and energy-efficient homes. These projects all require electricity grid connections, a critical bottleneck.
In the UK, an unprecedented surge in connection requests has led to many projects on the waiting list and most requests failing. Data standardisation and interoperability issues exacerbate the problem, as mentioned in the latest joint Ofgem and DESNZ report on Grid Connections in the UK.
This challenge is not unique to the UK, as major economies like the USA, Germany, and France face similar grid connection issues.
Voltquant wants to solve this by developing a universal grid data standard and then applying advanced machine learning models to the data to optimise the identification, management, and application process for electricity grid permissions. This leads to significant reduction in go/no-go analysis preparation, application processing and allows for intelligent planning.
Data can also be used to inform the grid provider and the government on areas of high demand to better guide infrastructure investments.
