Grant Description

Cwmbran-based Amotio is an early-stage startup committed to transforming orthopaedic revision surgery through an innovative approach to bone cement removal. Their groundbreaking technology utilises patient scanning and 3D surgical planning to create personalised cutting guides and tools, ensuring precise and efficient removal of bone cement in long bones like the femur and humerus.

This breakthrough promises improved patient outcomes, surgical team efficiency, and cost reduction for healthcare providers.

The NHS performs ~45k total hip arthroplasties (THA) per year. Approximately 8-10% of these are revision THAs, replacing implants/checking components. Implant replacement requires the technically demanding removal of bone cement, which can lead to complications and extended rehabilitation time.

In this project, Amotio will directly address this to further develop their innovative and precise AmotioUltra device, which allows for reduced surgery/rehabilitation time, minimal damage to bone structures and almost-immediate weight-bearing. In this project they will develop and test prototypes. Amotio will begin seeking early regulatory approval in the UK and EU to allow for prompt commercialisation of their technology.

Amotio's highly experienced team comprises successful entrepreneurs/tech experts, with strong networks of industry and clinical stakeholders, ensuring successful project delivery and rapid post-project commercialisation.
