Grant Description

**Problem**

The UK Government has a target of 50GW offshore wind by 2030, however turbines are currently only available from two EU manufacturers and are reliant on massive installation infrastructure (cranes and jackup barges) of which there is a global vessel shortage. Consequently, there is a huge bottleneck in both supply and installation.

In addition, the UK is targeting 60% locally manufactured content, which is not feasible with the current supply chain.

Onshore, many sites are suitable for wind generation, but existing turbines don't meet the needs of the landowners. Many farmers are interested in microgeneration but don't currently have an affordable option with suitable pay back times to meet their needs. **Solution**

Our technology addresses this challenge with innovative new designs for wind turbines that can be built in the UK (onshore by existing manufacturers/shipbuilders) and can be deployed easily on or offshore without specialist infrastructure.

We aim to start by demonstrating the concept with a 1.5kW unit suitable for farmers, businesses (warehouses, charging stations, etc) and local authorities/highways agencies. **Innovation**

Our technology is the first practical solution to combine a conventional wind turbine with AWEC systems reducing environmental impact by 30%. **Benefits are:** * Smaller modules which can be rapidly commercialised.

* No need for cranes or jack up barges: can be easily built in any UK shipyard onshore and floated to site (offshore version) * Increased availability and reliability (continues generating power in event of module failure).

* Reduced environmental impact: 30% less material, 50% increased recyclability and we estimate each 1.5kW module would produce 2600kWh p.a. and cost around £9k each (with a single foundation/support structure costing around £5k). The modules can be stacked on the same foundation and so a 4-stack 6kW array would cost around £41k producing an annual ROI of 7.5%. at least 30% less non-recyclables. (Potentially further improvements with mycelium blades, explored in this project).**Unlike the existing state-of-the-art:**

* Our innovation is modular and can be stacked in larger configurations or integrated with other technologies (e.g. water pumps or offshore hydrogen generations).

* Our patented shroud structure can reduce the moving turbine size by 20% and prevents the kite from entanglement (in case of AWEC failure), **Project Approach**

In this project, we will take a people-centred design approach, engaging with potential 1.5kW customer representatives and other stakeholders. The will explore user needs, pain points and current barriers to adoption while also collaborating to refine and improve designs.
