On December 12, 2023, the Minister of Health of Sao Tome and Principe, Célsio Junquiera, and Chinese Ambassador, Xu Yingzhen, signed the Protocol on the Dispatch of Chinese Medical Teams to Sao Tome and Principe from 2024 to 2029.
Under the agreement, four Chinese medical teams would be sent from the Sichuan province of China to Sao Tome and Principe, where they would be stationed at Ayres de Menezes Central Hospital for 18-month missions beginning in September 2024.
Each team would include specialists in obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, anesthesia, acupuncture, odontology, cardiovascular medicine, and dentistry.
The medical teams were intended to address a shortage of specialty doctors in Sao Tome and Principe, develop the country's health sector, and promote health cooperation between the two countries.
