Grant Description

Project Summary The Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI) Detroit P20 SPORE in Cancer Health Disparities comprises two Research Projects, three Shared Resource Core components (Administration, Biospecimen and Patient and Community Engagement), and a Developmental Research Program (DRP). The Administrative Core provides a common

management structure for the P20 SPORE; i.e., the overall coordination of all P20 SPORE-related activities associated with the Research Projects, Shared Resource Cores, DRP, and Advisory Boards. Specifically, the Administrative Core will support the P20 SPORE by integrating various tasks, including 1)

providing leadership and oversight of all P20 SPORE activities involving Research Projects, the Biospecimen Core, Patient and Community Engagement Core and the Developmental Research Program as well as a seamless integration with the Cancer Center overall; 2) facilitating communications between P20 SPORE

participants, the National Cancer Institute, and the general public, and fostering intra-SPORE and inter-SPORE interactions; 3) overseeing fiscal and resource management for each component of the P20 SPORE; 4) ensuring compliance with all NIH and institutional grant regulations; 5) developing measures to evaluate the progress and

effectiveness of each component of the P20 SPORE as well as the overall effectiveness of the P20 SPORE in cancer health disparities; 6) soliciting guidance and objective feedback from the Internal and External Advisory Boards, P20 Cancer Action Council, and coordinating those meetings, including the Annual SPORE Research

Retreat; and 7) providing central guidance in transitioning the P20 planning grant to a full P50 SPORE application. The Administrative Core contributes to the overall efficiency of the P20 SPORE by leveraging the existing administrative infrastructure of KCI, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, for the successful

management of the numerous projects, led by Drs. Schwartz and Bepler, MPIs of this application. This strong administrative infrastructure will enable investigators to focus on the science of cancer health disparities.
