On December 11, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China provided a cash grant to the Jose Ramon Tabrane Maternity Hospital in Matanzas Province, Cuba, as emergency assistance following the August 2022 oil tank explosion in the province.
The donation was formally handed over by Chinese Ambassador Ma Hui at a ceremony held at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended by representatives of Cuba’s Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) and the hospital.
While the monetary value of the donation was not publicly disclosed, official MFA press releases confirm it as “现汇援助” (cash-based foreign aid).
The donation was made to help the hospital recover from physical and financial losses caused by the explosion, which had strained Cuba’s already fragile public health system.
This donation follows earlier post-disaster support provided by China to Cuba after the 2022 Matanzas oil tank explosion, which included medical and firefighting supplies.
