Capacity development among academic trainees to develop sustainment strategies in community settings

SUMMARY This Administrative Supplement to R01HL15838 (Enhancing capacity in faith-based organizations to implement and sustain multilevel innovations to improve physical activity) is in response to NOT-OD-23-002, the Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Administrative Supplements to Recognize Excellence in Diversity,

Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Mentorship. Research demonstrates that most health programs are not sustained beyond one year following initial implementation. Studies also shows that one of the most important factors impacting students’ long-term and short-term goal achievement is effective mentorship at

diverse levels throughout their training. The proposed Administrative Supplement aims to enhance the sustainment plan of Faith in Action, an evidence-based intervention (EBI) for increasing physical activity among Latinas in church settings, through the implementation of three sustainment strategies (audit and

feedback loops, developing and establishing financial models, and increasing organizational capacity to support sustainment). It is hypothesized that the three additional sustainment strategies in the Administrative Supplement will optimize sustainment in the parent grant, allowing churches to continue receiving the benefits

beyond research grant funding. We will conduct structured nterviews with church leaders, church staff, and promotoras (i.e., Community Health Workers) and brief SPRINT interviews with payers and experts. Findings from these interviews will inform the development of an Action Plan for sustainment. The Administrative

Supplement also proposes to foster D&I and sustainment research skills of trainees from under-represented backgrounds using rigorous methods (i.e., Intervention Mapping). This opportunity will also increase the capacity of the team to develop a sustainable mentorship infrastructure that contributes to sustainment

research.
