Grant Description

PROJECT SUMMARY This proposal submission responds to a call for an Administrative Supplement to Existing NIH Grants for Equipment Purchase in which the Integrative Center for Precision Nutrition and Human Health (COBRE- Nutrition) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa aims to purchase a total reflection X-Ray fluorescence (TXRF)

Spectrometer model S4 T-Star 200 manufactured by Bruker AXS LLC. The TXRF spectrometer is a state-of-the- art benchtop equipment to rapidly analyze ultra-trace element content in various samples, including biological fluids, food/supplements, cells, tissues, cell culture media, water, and other environmental samples, using small

amounts of sample and with a detection limit at the ppb range. The specific aims of this Administrative Supplement request are: 1) to purchase a TXRF system to the UH community to be administered by a Core Facility inside the COBRE-Nutrition infrastructure; and 2) to provide access, training and technical support to

researchers from the broad UH community in the use of the TXRF system. The TXRF will be housed in the Lipidomics Core Facility under the CRAFT structure of the COBRE-Nutrition. Proposed users include Research Project and Pilot Project Leaders of the COBRE-Nutrition, and multiple funded PIs from colleges and schools of

the UH system. The COBRE-Nutrition benefits directly through expanding the breadth of several scientific project outcomes.
