In 2016, the Chinese Government pledged to contribute USD $200 million to the United Nations over a ten year period.
The United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF) was established to channel these earmarked funds to specific projects in coordination with the UN.
The UNPDF is divided into two sub-funds: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund and The Secretary-General's Peace and Security Sub-Fund.
Approved in 2018 and implemented between November 2018 and December 2021, USD $799,298 was allocated from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund to support member countries of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) develop their National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).
The target countries included Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Kenya, and Niger.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) implemented the project along in collaboration with the ECA’s sub‐regional offices and national counterparts in the pilot countries.
The goal of the project was to improve and develop geospatial data information resources and services to achieve the 2030 SDGs in the selected pilot countries.
The UNECA organized regional workshops, developed policy guidelines, and developed an online application for sharing and accessing geospatial information resources and products.
Strengthening the capacities of ECA Member States to develop geospatial information resources and services in support of the implementation and monitoring of the sustainable development goals Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
