Grant Description

This grant funds a feasibility study of the potential, impact, and viability of the City of Cape Town investments in five information and communication technology (ICT) areas: (1) enabling infrastructure; (2) intelligent transportation systems; (3) safety and security; (4) digital inclusion infrastructure; and (5) digital literacy.

The feasibility study supports exports of U.S. goods and services for priority ICT and smart city projects that will increase access to affordable, reliable telecommunication services and improve the efficiency and quality of municipal services in Cape Town, South Africa.

This grant amendment funds phase II (Tasks 17-30) of the feasibility study project to evaluate the potential, impact, and viability of key information and communications technology investments for the City of Cape Town Municipality.

Phase II of the feasibility study would assess the potential, impact, and viability of, as well as develop a framework for, the deployment of a citywide low-power wireless access network using long-range data transmission technology to improve the City of Cape Town's data collection and monitoring capabilities for its water distribution system.
