Almost 60% of all children under the age of 5 suffer chronic malnutrition and stunting, conditions that are more severe in rural areas and among the indigenous population.
From 2000 to 2009, maternal mortality was steady between 271 and 191 per 100,000 live births, which was the highest mortality rate in the Republic of Guatemala during the last decade.
