Cacao Initiative

The Cacao Initiative will establish a national productive cacao value-chain to support El Salvador in becoming a net exporter of cacao.

Major activities will include developing a policy framework and national alliance for sustainable and competitive cacao production, new cacao agroforestry systems, and increasing the incomes and profits of small farmers through market-oriented and environmentally sustainable production practices.

This activity, a Global Development Alliance, will leverage funds from a consortium of implementing partners and public sector organizations to enable El Salvador to become a net exporter of cacao.This activity, which supports the Partnership for Growth Presidential Initiative goal to increase the productivity of tradables, will develop national extension services for farmers and provide training and technical assistance for quality standards and market opportunities for export.

Assistance for harvest and post-harvest infrastructure will enable the processing of larger volumes of cacao and generate higher incomes for farmers.

The establishment of strategic partnerships with local and international private sector, government and non-governmental organizations to develop a competitive and sustainable cacao value chain on a national scale in El Salvador is a key element to ensure sustainability upon completion of this activity.
