In a context of rising concern for the health effects of noise, cumulated to other environmental factors such as air pollution, this project investigates the underlying fundamental methods in order to propose a model assessing the cumulative societal impact of noise emissions, air pollution, and congestion associated with road traffic. The proposed multidisciplinary research will establish a framework where direct trade-offs between these environmental factors are estimated, enabled by the definition of a common homogeneous aggregated metric.
Among these environmental considerations, a specific research focus will be put on the complex question of their relative cost, as this remains to a large extent an open question in a context of growing demand for urban mobility.
In particular, distributing the associated costs to individual contributors or specific events at the microscopic scale is a necessary step to take in order to be able to investigate the complex interactions impacting the transport system at a larger scale.A major outcome of the proposed project is to enable the meso-scale evaluations of the impact associated with transport sub-systems taking into account trade-offs between their societal benefits and cumulative environmental footprint, serving as a basis for dynamic environmental taxation.
A representation via a Geographic Information System (GIS) dynamic tool will be developed in order to disseminate the results among stakeholders.
