Many of the main biodiversity threats act over large scales, affecting populations broadly. Large scale threats require large scale monitoring.
By using recent advances within movement ecology we now have acces to completely new tools to monitor the large scale movement flows of aerial migrants.
By extracting biological information from entire networks of weather radar stations we can in a reliable way continuously monitor where migrants fly, when they fly and how many they are. As a first step I will in this project focus on bird migration over a part of Scandinavia; Sweden, Finland and Denmark.
I will map the main flyways and investigate how bird migration over these countries have changed over the last 10-years.
I will also make the radar data available in an easy to explore website targeted at the wide range of stakeholders interested in where birds fly and when they do. These stakeholders include birders, wind energy industry, infrastructure planners, educators and the aviation industry.
