Purpose and goal:
The purpose of the preliminary study Hydrogen-based fuels for work machines was to investigate the possibility of using hydrogen as a fuel for work machines. Partly generally for newly produced work machines, but above all the possibility of converting existing machines. To achieve the aim, concrete objective were set up: Map possible hydrogen-based fuels; investigate the technical and economic conditions for converting existing machines; identify future research and to communicate the results.
The project has fulfilled its purpose and the objectives are mainly met Expected results and effects:
The results show that there are technical prerequisites for converting existing work machines to hydrogen operation, by changing the engine or converting an existing. However, the cost of engine replacement/conversion could not be determined.
Furthermore, the study shows that there are conditions to locally produce hydrogen gas at a cost on par with HVO. At present, however, an efficient supply chain for hydrogen is lacking.
The results justify a pilot study where a work machine is converted to hydrogen operation as well as an in-depth analysis regarding local hydrogen production. Approach and implementation:
The preliminary study has been carried out by Björn Samuelsson and Anders Pettersson (LTU) in collaboration with Roma Grus AB. An analysis of the activities at RGAB together with literature studies and contacts with industry forms the basis for this feasibility study. Three physical meetings with RGAB and several remote meetings have been held, a meeting with the industry organization has also been held.
