Grant Description

This project aims to develop knowledge and theory on how self determination, in issues related to health and activity for persons with mild-moderate Intellectual Disability living in LSS housing, evolves in the interaction between the supported person and the supporter, based on experiences from the Covid -19 pandemic.People with intellectual disability (ID) have rights to service in daily activities and housing.

During pandemic, daily activity services were cancelled or reduced in 2/3 of the municipalities in Sweden.

This led to a situation where residents were isolated in their homes, often with shortage of staff due to illness and lack of normal routines as well as lack of clear information about the new regulations.

Shortcomings in the area of LSS housing had been reported earlier, revealing a lack of participation and autonomy for the residents. To many, work at daily activity services is the only activity that the person is engaged in. This all together led to an increase in psychological stress and decrease in health.

Persons with ID experienced major negative changes related to staying in house and social isolation as well as difficulties with following new and changing rules. Two studies contribute to new knowledge and theory.Study A: A grounded theory approach is applied. Eight persons with ID (mild to moderate), living in LSS housing, will be interviewed.

Interviews with staff, managers and significant others will also be conducted.

Analysis will be performed according to constant comparative method, which brings that data will be collected until saturation is met.Study B: This study takes advantage of the situation where persons with ID have had the opportunity to acknowledge changes in their everyday life during the pandemic.

These changes form a starting point for a group discussion where relevant goals in Agenda 2030 are identified and discussed from the question: "What kind of support do persons with ID define to be necessary to achieve the goals?
