Grant Description

The overarching purpose of the interdisciplinary project ROUTE TO PARIS, is to explore and develop the forests’ climate change mitigation potential.

More specifically, the aim is to join sustainable forest land-use to the overall route towards a low carbon society as envisioned in the Paris climate agreement.

Our team, consisting of experts in forest policy and management from a natural and social sciences as well as humanities is exceptionally well suited to take on this challenge and provide important decision-making support for the forestry sector to achieve the necessary climate change transition and contribute to societal value in a broader perspective.

While learning from previous transitions, we will analyze carbon flows in the society based on different forest (policy) scenarios, engage in conversations with stakeholders to provide a knowledge base for how to overcome current barriers in forest policy, including policy instruments, consumer behaviors and practical management that may prevent a transition to sustainable forestry practices that would increase the climate benefits of forests, relative to today’s practices.

Furthermore, we will in close collaboration with actors identify and develop innovative concepts aimed to empower and incentivize forest owners across Sweden to apply climate smart forestry practices.
