Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The project will develop and demonstrate an innovative & sustainable solution from SWT for tailorable water purification, with installations for clean drinking water in rural India (water kiosk) and as an ultra-clean water treatment unit for H2 generation. Machine learning algorithms, IoT control and BIG data will be incorporated to build smart, water & energy efficient systems which operate on water-as-a-service model.

In addition, new catalytic materials and a novel reactor design will be developed to generate green H2, contributing to both clean water & sustainable energy goals Expected results and effects:

A successful demonstration for drinking water will help SWT to develop a new market, which is important from a humanitarian perspective and with huge revenue potential & growth prospects. The collaboration with HPCL, gives SWT access to partner with the network (> 20000 retail units in India), resources and business motive to market the product & scale up production capacity in India.

In addition, the demonstration of ultra-pure water for H2 production will be an important stepping stone for SWT, KTH and HPCL to enter the H2 production market, which is another key business segment for HPCL Approach and implementation:

The project is divided into phases. Phase 1 takes place in Sweden for developing the machine learning interface with predictive maintenance, remote trouble-shooting & SWT system hardware architecture. In phase 2, the unit will be shipped & set-up in India at a HPCL retail site with clean drinking water issues in surrounding communities.

Payment schemes (pay-per-use) & business model analysis will be developed & tailored in collaboration with HPCL. For H2 generation, KTH & HPCL will develop the novel catalyst & reactor respectively, with SWT supplying ultra-clean water & joint testing
