Safe and secure transport corridors in India (SSTCI)

Purpose and goal:

This project is part of the SITIS partnership which consist of Industries, Academia and Authorities in both India & Sweden. Partners are coming together with their own products, Processes, Competency and facilities to support national ambitions of improved road safety through technology advancements that are backed by a data

driven approach. This project aims to demonstrate the possibility to improve existing and new solutions for safe, secure & efficient intercity transport of people in India in a scalable & cost-efficient manner. Expected results and effects:

A first step will be taken to understand how Indian public transport with intercity buses can be made safer and more efficient by collecting & analyzing both existing and new data related to different road users´ behavior and efficiency.

The expected results include a) scalable and reusable data collection methodology and analysis, b) initial understanding of the traffic safety and efficiency challenges for public transport (buses) between cities and c) examples of how challenges could be addressed via existing solutions / creation of new solutions.

Approach and implementation:

A proof-of-concept method / platform for data collection and analysis has been developed in the preparation phase. The existing platform will be further developed and installed in a bus and how it can be scaled up will be explored. The platform will be used to collect data on road users´ behavior from some selected corridors. This will be done with buses in real traffic.

Data will be combined and analyzed together with data from other sources (eg crash databases) to understand the suitability of different safety and efficiency solutions.
