Globally, water demand increases, e.g. due to a warmer climate. At the same time fresh water is scarce, also in several areas in Sweden, especially in summer. One example is Gotland which has a high number of visitors during summer.
One option to reduce the pressure on potable water sources is the re-use of greywater, which is generated in source-separating wastewater systems. Such a system is currently being planned for the new district of Visborg in Gotland.
Re-use of greywater is a complex challenge that requiring innovative thinking in responsibilities, economy and organization. In addition, the selection of suitable treatment techniques for greywater is complex.
The vision of WAVE2 is to implement an integrated system that circulates greywater and meets the water demand of different end users through the production of fit-for-purpose water for irrigation, drinking water and groundwater recharge.
The implemented system leads the way for others how to manage greywater flows resource-efficiently and in relation to the demand.
In WAVE2 we will identify relevant stakeholders and analyse their needs (WP1), develop a systems analysis (WP2), state-of-the-art (WP3) and communication plan for the implementation project (WP4). Five workshops are planned to which different stakeholders will be invited. The project partners are Region Gotland as the “problem owner” and Luleå University of Technology.
