The Swedish water and wastewater utilities are facing future major challenges connected to climate adaption, change in incoming loads and stricter regulations in combination with the journey of transformation from treatment plants to production plants.
If these challenges are not handled correctly, there is a significant risk for an increased pollution to lakes and seas which might also affect and complicate safe drinking water production. The challenge is complex with several different aspects that needs to be considered and prioritized.
Today, utilities are usually working in a reactive manner towards scenario changes, and a shift towards a more proactive manner is needed. The focus of this project, which will be coordinated by Svenskt Vatten, involves four major water related challenges: eutrophication, micro pollutants, climate adaption and safe production of drinking water.
The ambition of the project is to produce three reports that compiles and provides a status update on existing knowledge, technical installations and on-going research connected to sustainable water services. Based on the reports, several suggested pilot projects and implementers of the pilot projects will be presented.
The presented pilot projects are planned to be carried out in a future implementation project. Together with Svenskt Vatten and the utilities concerned authorities and universities will be included in the project. Representatives will also be included in the project reference group.
