The problem owner in this project, Lidingö municipality, has identified the development of innovative, effective programs of measures for achieving and maintaining good water quality and ecological status as a major, complex challenge to urgently solve in concert among municipalities and other actors for many inland and coastal waters around Sweden.
The project´s Stockholm University team has a successful track-record of researching, gaining essential new insights, and developing novel methods and tools for meeting this challenge, which will be practically tested, used, and innovatively advanced in this project.
The coastal bay Askrikefjärden is a highly relevant case study to be carried out already in the preparatory project for synthesizing and testing available data and models, and assessing key gaps and needs for new knowledge and innovative advances of methods, tools and solutions.
The preparatory project will also develop the municipal and other actor networks and communication platforms needed for synergistic planning and implementation of effective measures and solutions for Askrikefjärden – and by active extension in the implementation project also in other water bodies regionally and nationally around Sweden.
The project will increase sustainability by its advancements of knowledge base, collaborations, and innovations needed to select and implement effective measures for combating eutrophication and pollution of inland and coastal-marine waters and ecosystems.
