Grant Description

Mighty Buildings from the US has developed and is selling small cheaper dwellings built using Additive manufacturing (AM or 3D-printing).

Dwellings are manufactured in mobile micro-factories where ca 70% of bearing panels for roof, walls and flooring are produced. Automated assembly follows for windows, doors, etc. Solar panels and interior equipment are available as an option. The house is finally mounted on site at much shorter times than during conventional building.

The silent, light and compact factory requires no more space than builder’s booth and is fit to stay near building sites. Tight panel surfaces lead to great moisture insulation, fire safety and sound insulation. The manufacturing enables easy deconstruction for reuse, hence creating new value-added chain.

Following its success, the company seeks Joint Ventures for a European expansion.

The companies iConsultingBC and Argoman have engaged in discussions with Mighty Buildings that will soon result in NDA and MoU for adaptation to the Swedish consumer and a factory in Sweden. Technically, adaptation to EU sustainability (through LCA and EPD) and circularity requirements will be studied.

CE-marking, Declaration of Performance (DoP) and adaptation to Swedish regulations e.g. from PBL, BBR and Eurocodes (structural and durability) will also be investigated.

Development of apps that enable Business-to-Consumer interaction during concept evaluation and later for measuring e.g. energy use, as well as Business-to-Business integration (between established IT-tools for Swedish building actors and apps for AM) will be studied. Businesswise, a variety of 1-storey buildings with size 30-140 sqm will be considered as a pilot case.

A new business model will be launched, whereby established actors from the building construction industry such as real estate developers, contractors and house builders can rent the factory or order panels and modules. The goal is to develop a product fit for market launch within a year.
