Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

In this project, we have studied obstacles and opportunities related to "last mile" logistics for new circular business models. Based on a design science approach, we have tested sustainable logistics solutions and developed new processes for deliveries as well as tested a packaging-free delivery solution to consumers. Business concepts and logistics solutions are well received by consumers and great lessons in logistics in managing rental models have been learned.

For a sustainable circular development, new and stronger policy instruments need to be developed and implemented. Expected results and effects:

The project has resulted in updated processes at Parently, lessons learned in logistics and packaging solutions for Bring and Stora Enso, as well as new knowledge about the operational challenges and opportunities with circular business concepts related to logistics. This has a direct impact on consumer satisfaction and indirect basis for the need for new policy instruments for sustainable implementations of circular economy.

Furthermore, two scientific publications have been produced and presented at international conferences, and now in process to journals. Approach and implementation:

The work of all partners has been integrated and exploratory in two rounds of field tests. Based on actual customer orders, we have integrated deliveries, swaps and pickups into regular logistics flows. A bio-based packaging for return use was developed and used directly in the operational work.

A scale-up model was developed where the results show that for Parently´s pram rental, CO2e can be reduced by 60% compared to today´s linear models. The result is affected by consumer behaviour as reconditioning and transportation increase with shorter rental periods.
