Purpose and goal:
This project aimed to enhance application of alternative cementitious materials in the construction supply chain, through improving the current available knowledge regarding drivers and barriers for realizing the identified technical opportunities in using binders with lower carbon footprints. The improvements are aimed in terms of standardization, environmental/economical/social aspects of the market impact along this value chain as well as proper communication ways of scientific and technical outcomes to the authorities, policy makers and the government.
Expected results and effects: Our conclusions indicate a strong inter-relation within the analyzed topic.
The market is strongly dependent on the standards and the standards require strong actions from policy makers. The materials in focus might not be available in as large quantities as cement volumes and therefore a huge driving force in concrete actions towards standardization and business development is bound to policies. These policies are to ban pure utilization of cement, hence using alternative cementitious materials would gain further interest.
Approach and implementation:
In this project we have considered drivers and barriers towards real-life application of industrial wastes with cementitious properties. 3 main work packages were in focus in this project: 1. Standardization 2. Market analysis 3. Policies
The acceptance of a technological innovation can be limited by the lack of acceptance at the multi-national, national, regional and local level. Within this work, how tradition effects both the formal (regulations, standards) and informal (practice) consensus development procedures within the construction value chain, is assessed.
