Battery Classification for Battery Life Cycle Management

Purpose and goal: 1. Improvements to the existing data logging strategy have been proposed.

2. The battery´s second-hand applications together with eligibility requirements and mapping against Volvo´s battery properties have been investigated. The size of the second life market has been studied based on historical growth and forecast based on current situation.

3. Various approaches to battery RUL modeling and classification were performed along with the need for onboard logged data. 4. High Level Functional Architecture Report for Battery Lifecycle Management and Recommender System Expected results and effects:

The work was carried out in three stages including feasibility study- and evaluation phase regarding data logging strategy, development of knowledge base regarding second life battery applications and initial study on optimal handling of batteries.

The study resulted in recommendations and suggestions for improvements to the on-board battery data logging strategy, a set of second-life applications suitable for Volvo batteries and architecture, and information/signal flow diagrams for “Battery Life-Cycle Management & Recommender System". Approach and implementation:

The project was carried out in 3 work packages. Initially, most of the work was done through virtual meetings and workshops due to COVID. In addition, the first work package took extra time due to unexpected changes in project participants.

Because of these problems, the overall project was delayed by a few months. Due to the confidentiality of vehicle data, only certain metadata were used in this project for analysis and design. The assumptions used for analysis in this project were agreed between two parties.
