E! 115341 FORESTMAP, Deep Forestry

Purpose and goal:

Today’s forestry data is acquired by fieldworkers that manually measure trees by hand. This is time consuming and results in only a fraction of the trees being measured. This project will bring to market a drone that autonomously flies below the tree canopy, in-between the trees, to produce an accurate 3D map of the entire forest.

Our software derives precise dimensions of the forest, terrain, and other features. The map empowers forestry owners to make better decisions in harvesting, thinning, and plantation. Expected results and effects:

The project will result a fully operational pipeline for digitizing global forestry. The pipeline will include the fully operational autonomous drones, an internationally scalable drone manufacturing capacity, the map building and forestry back-end analysis software, and the front-end portal for delivery of digital forestry products to Deep Forestry´s customers.

SCA Skog will test and trail the drones under real-world fieldwork conditions to ensure they meet the requirements of existing forestry fieldwork practices. Approach and implementation:

The project has four main areas of development: (1) software on-board the drone, (2) software in-the cloud, (3) drone hardware, manufacturing, and peripherals, and (4) field testing. Each of these systems will be further developed to a point where the fully realized consumer product is being scaled-up commercially by Deep Forestry. Throughout the project there will be multiple opportunities for communication and discussions across the EU forestry sector with industry executives and fieldworkers, with initial discussions beginning in early 2022.
