Purpose and goal:
FLAMELESS will develop & demonstrate an efficient, fuel-flexible microCombined Heat & Power (mCHP) system, optimised for hydrogen fuel but also compatible with natural gas and biogas. The FLAMELESS mCHP will deliver higher carbon savings per € invested than any available mCHP technology -a game changer for a market that is currently propped up by unsustainable government subsidies.
Expected results and effects:
European mCHP sales have the potential to exceed 8m units/year over the next decade. However, with hydrogen set to become an intrinsic part of Europe’s integrated energy system, existing systems relying on natural gas will be outdated by 2030. Conversely, alternatives based on hydrogen fuel cells cannot run on existing natural gas supplies without costly gas reforming & water purification hardware. Thus, an important market opportunity exists for an innovative, fuel-flexible solution.
Approach and implementation:
The project consists of nine work packages connected to mile stones. During the first year, the m-CHP’s subsystems (core module, burner ECU, heat exchanger, grid interface and electronics) will be developed in parallel (WP1-5). Thereafter, during year two, all subsystems in the mCHP will be integrated and finally demonstrated (WP 6-7).
