Purpose and goal:
The goal of this project is to develop a method for measuring the hardness and hardening depth by using laser ultrasound (LUS), focusing on induction hardened components in the automotive industry. The purpose is to increase the resource efficiency in hardening processes and to ensure quality requirements for all manufactured components, which today is not economically possible.
Expected results and effects: The main results expected from the project can be summarized as: -Design of a LUS-system customized for measuring the surface hardness and depth of hardening. -Methodology for creating robust calibration curves for LUS-data. -Model that can translate the LUS-data into hardening outcome.
-Roadmap for industrial implementation of LUS. -Bring LUS hardness/hardening depth method from TRL 4 to 6.
This will result in advancing non-destructive testing for the vehicle industry and other industries utilizing hardening process. Approach and implementation:
The REAL project is divided into six work packages distributed over the three-year project duration. The packages focuses on project management, sample and equipment definition, nitro-carburized components, LUS calibration curve development, implementation and productization, and dissemination of results. The REAL project will be carried out in close collaboration between industry, institute, and university. The consortia contains all relevant competencies for a successful project.
