Purpose and goal:
Biofiber Tech (BFT) AB and the pulp manufacturer Holmen AB needed to differentiate between crystalline dispersion from biobased fiber, polymer, and graphene crystallinity and dispersion to standardize production. This has been challenging so far. Therefore, this project aimed to use scanning WAXS and microtomography for bulk structure characterization of graphene-based biocomposites.
The goal of the project has been for Biofiber Tech AB (BFT) and Holmen AB, together with RISE AB, to develop the analysis method. Expected results and effects:
Personnel from the Biocomposite company conducted experiments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France. WAXS (Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering) was performed at the ID13 beamline to identify the stacking of graphene layers in NFCP films. µCT (micro-computed tomography) at the BM05 beamline was used to obtain bulk information about a 3D-printed kayak.
The WAXS results will serve as the baseline for standardizing the air barrier layers for Holmen. The results from the µCT volume will be used by BFT and the kayak manufacturer for production standardization. Approach and implementation:
All project partners have been actively involved in both experimental work and data analysis. The collaboration has been good and product owners are satisfied with the results.
