Purpose and goal:
The project is a feasibility study on how cities can plan and build to meet future needs regarding deliveries to residences and businesses. The purpose of the study was to investigate opportunities and obstacles in connection with the planning of new city districts to future-proof efficient deliveries that meet visions/ objectives in the sustainable society of the future. The project has taken its starting point in Mälarporten in Västerås and Tomtebo strand in Umeå.
Expected results and effects: Summary of results:
- There is a lot of knowledge about freight transport, but it is scattered and not easy to find aggregated info. Additionally, there is a lack of data for analysis and forecasting
- Freight transport is often forgotten in the initial stage of urban development - increased focus on freight transport is necessary it should be included in the planning process through quality management of work methods
- Digitization and close cooperation with civil engineering facilitate reduced negative effects of the forecasted increasing volumes of freight transport in the future Approach and implementation:
The survey has been done by examining data and forecasts, target documents and visions etc. which are used for the municipality´s requirements and design of the physical environment to enable sustainable freight and waste transport to/from/within selected city districts. Mapping has taken place together with responsible officials. In parallel, a literature study has been carried out, as well as dialogue with experts and other relevant ongoing initiatives addressing last/first mile delivery in the urban development context.
