Purpose and goal:
The aim is to map the cause of the markedly increased fiber strength that can be created for certain fibers with plasma treatment and test the concept for fiber types that are relevant to the participants. The goal is to create a concept and decision basis for the exploitation of the technology and the FOI application. This includes
performance, cost and sustainability. Expected results and effects:
In the event of an expected technological leap, this will lead to a technical opportunity to exploit advanced, structural and lightweight composites of biofibers. These are expected to be able to replace glass and carbon fibers, with more durable materials. With successful results with ligninbased precursor, carbon fiber can be made from forest raw material instead of oil, with fewer process steps, reduced energy consumption, cheaper raw material and increased material yield. For
highstrength synthetic fiber, the technology offers opportunities for unique performance / weight. Approach and implementation:
The work is divided into 4 work packages. Where the work begins with verifying in what way plasma in early technical experiments has led to increased fiber strength for certain fibers. Based on that, a larger screening is planned with the intention of trying to recreate the corresponding effect on synthetic, biofibers and lignin-cellulose fibers. The results will also be evaluated in technical applications and demonstrators.
