Handheld blood flow imager for tomorrow

Purpose and goal:

The first purpose of the project was to give the researcher the opportunity to gain experience in research and development work at an established medical technology company. This has turned out well and led to a permanent employment of the researcher at the company at 50% in parallel with continued research at Linköping University 50%.

The second aim was research and development work towards a blood flow camera that can work in hand-held mode. Important steps in that direction have been taken in the project. Expected results and effects:

The exchange has led to a deepened collaboration between Perimed and the research group, and the deepened collaboration will continue in a way that benefits both organizations. It will also lead to new joint applications in the same field to reach the long-term goal of better diagnostics for the large patient group suffering from diabetic foot ulcers.

Although there was already an established collaboration, this project, in addition to giving the researcher valuable experience, has also led to a broader transfer of knowledge to Perimed in, for example, AI, in which the researcher, is an expert. Approach and implementation:

The researcher has worked remotely at Perimed from university to a large extent, with a couple of visits to Perimed a month. Especially in the beginning, it would have been better with a greater physical presence, but on the other hand, the Pandemic put a bit of a damper on that as well. What still made the arrangement workable is that the project manager has a role as adjunct associate professor at the university, so the two main persons have met much more physically.

The researcher has both worked concretely with implementation as well as had supervisory roles, which has been a successful mix.
