Purpose and goal:
The Light2Sustainable project has been based on the previous project LIGHTest, a two-node commercial test bed with a focus on lightweight solutions. In recent years, requirements and demand have increased for products with minimal environmental impact seen over the entire life cycle. The purpose of the project has been to further develop the LIGHTest testbed with the goal of creating a common vision and strategic idea for building an excellent research environment, i.e. create a center that strengthens the ability to include sustainability aspects for the entire product life cycle.
Expected results and effects:
The result of the project is a competence center designed to create sustainable production by research focused on Model Driven Product Development and Manufacturing, i.e. research on material modelling, material characterization and process modelling. A successful setup of center will contribute to i) climate neutral and circular production, ii) resource efficient and resilient value chains iii) global competitiveness, and iv) a socially sustainable industry.
Approach and implementation:
During the year, two workshops and many working meetings were held. There has been great interest and commitment to create a competence center that contributes to the impact targets. The work with the design of the competence center has shown that to include sustainability aspects for the entire product life cycle are very complex and challenging.
The strategy of connecting the competence center to existing research on digital twins therefore became a key to being able to define the design and orientation but at the same time to be able to ensure contributions to the long-term impact goals.
