Purpose and goal:
This project works towards traceable measurement of dynamic current. Through theoretical considerations and the construction of a dynamic current generator, suitable technologies were identified for empirical validation. The developed test bed enables implementation of multiple sensor technologies with reference measurement devices to allow for continued efforts towards establishment of a traceability chain.
Expected results and effects:
This project documents the limitations and applicability ranges for different sensor technologies. Inductive sensors such as the Rogowski and Pearson coil showed promise in observing both the high frequency and low frequency components of the dynamic current waveform. The low frequency components is only a small percentage of the total amplitude and considerably longer in duration, which makes (horizontal and vertical) acquisition of recorded data challenging.
Approach and implementation:
Considerable effort was put into the construction of a safe and functional generator capable of outputting the desired dynamic current waveform characteristics. The successful design enables implementation of multiple sensors and acquisition units to observe the phenomena of interest and comparison of sensor performance. The initial collection of data presented in this project establish the framework upon which a systematic methodology could be developed for traceability of measurements.
