Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

This project is the second part of the effort to create a national realization of the kilogram in Sweden. Since 20 May 2019, the kilogram is defined by Planck´s constant and one of the, by BIPM, recommended methods for its realization is with the help of a Kibble balance. Together with National Physical Laboratory in London, the new generation´s Kibblebalance is built applying a new and innovative design.

Realization with the help of a Kibble balance links the kilogram to the electric units where the National Metrology Laboratory at RISE has a well-developed area of competence. Expected results and effects:

The project is crucial for a continued international commitment regarding the mass unit. It is also necessary for a national realization of the kilogram which allows the NMI to independently offer our customers the same service as before. Approach and implementation:

In 2022, the focus will be on research visits at NPL in dialogue with their Kibble balance team as well as continued development of the necessary infrastructure, in the form of laboratory and other equipment, that are essential for the operation of the balance. In 2023, the installation of the balance at RISE is planned, as well as an increased focus on knowledge transfer and competence building.
