GIOTIS - deployment of IoT for innovative community use Skellefteå

Purpose and goal:

The project´s goal was to enhance the ability to develop IoT solutions within the public sector. It was the 30-month collaboration involved Skellefteå Kraft, Th1ng, LTU, and Skellefteå municipality. The focus was on establishing services, developing infrastructure, scaling up the LoRa network, and spreading knowledge.

We integrated IoT Open and Fiware to generate data for research, installed 85 sensors and 12 gateways, and launched pilot projects. The result includes a business model and IoT architecture integrated into the municipality´s IT infrastructure. Expected results and effects:

The project nearly achieved all its goals. We evaluated business models, organizational roles, processes, agreements, and security standards. Four pilot projects were carried out with various departments: Education, Support, Urban Planning, and Culture.

Over six different types of sensors were tested. Organizations can now borrow test kits before placing orders. Thanks to the extensive LoRa network, the municipality has access to IoT services. LTU, Th1ng, and Skellefteå Kraft benefit from shared data and better customer-tailored solutions. Approach and implementation:

At the beginning, the LoRa network´s initial area was mapped, and four pilot projects were selected. Processes to identify customer needs and manage sensors were developed, and initial tests were conducted. Skellefteå Kraft expanded the LoRa network, while Th1ng and LTU connected the platforms.

Problems arose when two pilot projects did not benefit customers, leading to workshops and revised goals. An intuitive interface is still lacking, but the IoT service now operates at full scale, and the LoRa network covers the municipality.
