Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

Evaluate the potential of micro- and nano celluloses to be formulated together with commercial quality lignin and used as multifunctional ingredients in cosmetic formulations. Different formulations have been made incorporating developed MC and MC-lignin hybrid materials in topical formulations together with using different oils, emollient esters, emulsifiers, with and without the humectant glycerol, and with co-thickener to the MC and L-MC material. Simpler formulations were more stable than complex formulations prepared by Assessa.

Expected results and effects:

We expect the project to use expand valorization of lignin and micro/nanocelluloses as natural ingredients in cosmetic formulations. Successful, stable formulations were produced and have shown the potential of this materials as rheology modifiers and as an antimicrobial agent. UV tests have shown UV absorbance in the range of UVB, However, still not clear how much lignin needs to be added to obtain good UV boosting.

The project contributed to deepen our understanding of processing lignin and nano/micro cellulose in cosmetics. Approach and implementation: The project was designed and divided into different work packages. WP1 Coordination WP2 Biorefinery Processes to isolate nanocelluloses and lignin from Eucalyptus.

WP3 Production, dispersion and characterization of the FineCell MC. WP4 Production and characterization of lignin & micro/nano cellulose hybrid ingredients WP5 Using the lignin & micro/nanocellulose hybrids as ingredients in cosmetic formulations WP6 Toxicology of lignocellulosic materials WP7 Economic performance and market strategies
