Purpose and goal:
We aim to develop a new therapy for ARDS based on a stabilized version of natural peptide found in the human body, known as BioS. We envision BioS as a drug for intravenous or inhalation use for both prevention and treatment of ARDS. To develop our compound into a marketable solution, we aim to: 1. Develop a formulation that is compatible with systemic and inhalation use
2. Show that BioS is effective in relevant, clinically translatable, models of ARDS 3. Develop a business plan to ensure effective commercial development and clinical translation Expected results and effects:
The project will provide a foundation to develop the BioS treatment concept in future clinical trials for eventual commercialization. BioS will be the first multi-action therapeutic for ARDS, able to prevent and treat infection, neutralize harmful inflammation, and normalize coagulation, therefore simultaneously targeting the major causes of ARDS symptoms.
Ultimately this will save lives, improve quality of life for survivors, and reduce the exorbitant healthcare costs associated with ARDS treatment. Approach and implementation: We will carry out the following activities: 1. Optimize an inhalation formulation for localized delivery 2. Carry out a detailed mechanistic characterization of inhaled and systemic BioS in clinically relevant models
3. Show efficacy of inhaled and systemic BioS in clinically translatable models 4. Develop a business plan to guide development, including market analysis, regulatory plan and IP strategy
