Grant Description

The rapidly increasing mobile traffic, the demand for ubiquitous connectivity, and the generation of data in large quantities are natural consequences of the digital information revolution.

These trends are expected to further increase in the era of connected intelligence, fueled by the interconnection of myriad autonomous devices (robots, vehicles, drones, etc.) with advanced sensing, communications, computing, and learning capabilities. These systems are expected to generate a tremendous amount of data that need to be communicated in real-time.

However, there are two major challenges to overcome.

First, generating, processing, transferring, and restoring remotely multimodal information in real-time, and the non-separable nature of the actions stated previously.

Second, the entire communication process, from the very beginning until achieving its purpose, must incorporate the importance and the usefulness of the information generated and transmitted.

This project has the ambitious objective to develop the theoretical and algorithmic foundations of goal-oriented, data important aware communication to overcome the aforementioned challenges and to reveal the power of future hyperconnected intelligent systems. The incorporation of the semantics of information will be the key.
