Strengthen food sector research and innovation by enabling use of neutron and synchrotron techniques

The aim is to strengthen the Swedish food sector and increase its innovative power by taking advantage of the long-term opportunities provided by MAX IV, ESS and its international counterparts. The project primarily allows for competence building for established researchers at Swedish research organizations within food research. The academy / research institute plays an important role because the industry´s use of this type of facility often takes place via researchers at these institutions.

Increased competence in X-ray and neutron-based characterization methods and adapted conditions at the facilities are made possible by bringing together experts in food science and, among other things, X-ray / neutron methods and data evaluation. This is considered to be an important enabler for a scientifically driven food industry, with sustainable process technology, along the entire value chain and increase the opportunity to attract scientific talent.

Approach and implementation:

The funding allows established researchers at Swedish research organizations to take part in training and competence building activities, primarily within the framework of the network NorthernLightsOnFoods already funded activities via LU (LINXS) 2022-2024. Initially, 11 higher education institutions and RISE are covered and there is budget space for additional higher education institutions to be added.

Existing experts at LU, MAX IV and RISE constitute project management. Även Chalmers, ESS and Livsmedelsföretagen have dedicated roles in executive and accessibility.
