Purpose and goal:
Inspired by the natural protective function of tree bark, the BarkBuild project aims to develop new wood treatment formulations and bark-based composites for wood building materials. We will use the bark´s polyphenols and other components for wood coatings and impregnation due to their protective properties against microorganisms and insects. In this way, the project contributes to solving the societal challenge of climate change by developing new, sustainable wooden building materials with lower environmental impact compared to existing commercial products.
Expected results and effects: BarkBuild will develop new bark-based wood protection and building formulations with superior
technical performance, safety, and sustainability in outdoor and indoor use. The technical aims of the project are linked to fundamental studies to understand microscopic structure of wood and possibilities to protect wood with bark-derived formulations. Approach and implementation:
BarkBuild is an ERA-NET project with partners from six European countries. The project is organized in six work packages led by five different partner organizations. The project involves exchange of information, materials, and personnel mobility within the network. The project has a well-defined management structures and the consortium is supported by an Industrial Advisory Board that includes relevant forest industry and manufacturing company stakeholders.
