Purpose and goal:
The goal of the pre-study has been to show that nanocomposite materials can be coated on optical fiber, to demonstrate desired properties in proof-of-concept, and to carry out an assessment of the technology´s commercial potential. The conclusion from the work is that the material provides some improvement in the desired properties, but that the demonstrated improvement in the preliminary study is relatively limited.
More work is required to improve the material and coating technology to justify a full effort towards commercialization. Expected results and effects:
The pre-study has shown that nanocomposite materials can be coated on optical fiber and that the coated fibers have improved durability, both in air and under an inert atmosphere, compared to reference fibers. Further optimization of NC concentration, material preparation, and coating quality is needed to thoroughly assess whether NC is a viable route to significantly increased durability, and to develop a fiber that demonstrates high enough performance to warrant steps toward commercialization and end-user testing.
Approach and implementation:
The project was carried out by RISE, in collaboration with two commercial partners. RISE has used experts on nanomaterials, composite materials, optical fiber development, manufacture in the project, while the two industrial partners have contributed with resources and expertise for market assessment, bench-marking against other development of fiber optics towards the same targets, and from end-use perspective.
An added value created by the project is a deepened collaboration between the three partners, plus a collaboration within the Swedish graphene community.
