Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

Projects purpose and aim is to manufacture and validate semi-industrial prototypes of self-lubricating 2D based polymer bearings in hydropower. For Kaplan turbines, it is important with design for minimal oil leakage risk and good long-term function. Previous research results indicate that the implementation of 2D materials together with other reinforcements significantly improves friction and wear properties.

Improved properties of the bearings increase the life of both bearings and other mechanisms, providing for improved economy using environmental friendly technique. Expected results and effects:

Att Utveckla´s new 2D / graphene polymeric composites and comparison with commercial composites with improved friction and abrasion properties for Kaplan turbines in hydropower plants. Improved properties of Kaplan turbines are important for reducing oil leakage risk and good long-term function. Increased service life on both stock and other mechanism, both are environmentally friendly and save money.

Approach and implementation:

To develop different 2D / graphene polymeric composites and comparison with commercial materials. To develop prototypes of best performing 2D / graphene-composites. Validation and demonstration in lab and simulated environment.

Development of new concepts for manufacturing and upscaling processes. Validate the new bearing prototypes in comparison with commercial bearings in environmentally friendly water-based liquids and dry conditions under semi-industrial technical real conditions. Results: Improved bearing properties, increased service life
