The purpose of the area analysis is to increase understanding of the competence in the area within Sweden. We think this is well fulfilled by the descriptions of: Driving forces that focus on understanding degradability Knowledge and which methods are needed when designing new sustainable material concepts.

The results constitute a description of the area and highlight the complexity. Definitions of central concepts are presented together with a model for how decomposition takes place. Degradation of a material is greatly affected by its environment and the presence of water and air etc. The project identified 5 clear needs for research and development.

The project´s plan was to go through scientific literature on biodegradability, mainly of plastics, and summarize the situation, as well as to draw a model for the process by using a number of definitions. Stakeholder dialogues and round table discussions were then carried out to formulate needs descriptions and gather expertise in the area.
